Your Weekend Binge-Watching List- Unmissable OTT Shows To Look Out For

Even though it appears that the lockdown following the Covid19 outbreak brought the world to a standstill, we know that it has not stopped. In fact, for industries that provide digital services, this lockdown may have even been a blessing in disguise! OTT platforms, or Over-The-Top services refer to the streaming platforms that offer content to watchers directly via the internet, thus bypassing cable, broadcast and satellite Tv. A recent study by Nielsen showed a drop of 40 percent in over-the-air or cable TV consumption in the past five years by 18 to 24-year-olds. The lockdown acted as the final straw for a lot of those who still rejected online streaming services. The fact that several big-budget movies starring elite actors are lined up for release on OTT platforms, now that theatres have been shut for months, is proof of the rising popularity of OTT platforms.

Globally, Netflix is one of the key players in OTT, projected to spend a whooping $17 billion (yes, you read that right- billion with a B) according to a forecast by Wall Street firm BMO Capital Markets. Only in the first quarter of 2020, Netflix added a staggering 15.8 million paid subscribers as a locked-down audience. While Netflix India and Amazon Prime Video India did not reveal their lockdown subscription statistics, our homegrown OTT platforms such as ZEE5 and AltBalaji have observed a staggering growth, with ZEE5 registering a significant 80% rise in subscription numbers and Alt Balaji registering 17,000 new subscribers each day in lockdown, a 60% increase from the average of only 10,600 per day in March prior to the lockdown. These numbers are testament to the fact that OTT platforms are here to stay. Bringing fresh content from exotic nooks and crannies of the world right to your screen- at your disposal to pause, play, repeat or watch later; and without any censorship- is a sweet deal for movie buffs. Moreover, with a variety of OTT platforms coming up, you can have an endless catalog of movies and shows at your disposal while paying less than an average PVR movie night expense.
